Local structure mapping of gel-spun ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers

We report on < 2 μm spatial resolution investigations of structural and morphological uniformity aligned high-performance gel-spun ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers (thicknesses ranging from 60 to 300 μm) whose processing includes draw quench. The degree orientation PE crystallites were found increase near the surface fiber filaments (skin-core structure) in all samples when considering P2 parameter calculated wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). increases with drawn down ratio (keeping quench temperature constant) decreases increasing constant). Orientation values polarized Raman spectroscopy measurements symmetric C–C stretching (1130 cm−1) bond showed clear skin-core structure highest overall orientation. also employ small-angle computed tomography (SAXS-CT) show that morphology (on length scale tens nm) exhibit two samples. thickness skin region (~12-17 µm) was estimated real-space SAXS be similar undrawn filaments.
